What I mean by “myth” is a story that expresses universal Truths about the world, coming forth from a specific culture’s expression of its past and its relationship to the divine. The deep cultural consciousness of a people is expressed by the stories the people tell and write; the accumulation of these stories becomes the culture’s. This book is the first and last image in the poem, which is a good way to know that it really matters to Rich. At the same time, it doesn't quite seem to belong in the same world as the dive down to the wreck. It's hard to imagine that this "book of myths" is just a book with some old myths in it.

Other People's Myths celebrates the universal art of storytelling, and the rich diversity of stories that people live by. Drawing on Biblical parables, Greek myths, Hindu epics, and the modern mythologies of Woody Allen and soap operas, Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty encourages us to feel anew the force of myth and tradition in our lives, and in the lives of other cultures.   Thus with much anticipation does one turn to the actual novels, the myths, these "universal and timeless stories that reflect and shape our lives" as the series' preface states.
